The city festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) taking place from 27th March to 2nd April will present a special programme of contemporary arts curated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) for the third time. The gallery evening with extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday includes projects from both Estonian and international artists, group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. TMW Arts also presents a studio tour and a vote for future arts stars.
The gallery evening with a special programme and extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday on March 28th from 17:00 to 21:00 includes projects from both Estonian and international artists, group exhibitions and solo exhibitions. The gallery evening is a great opportunity to get to know the Estonian art gallery landscape with visits to both newcomers and the old greats, while also meeting the gallery owners and artists. Tallinn Tuesday invites to an exhibition opening at Okapi Gallery, a visit to Haus Gallery for the last day of the exhibition and to enjoy international solo and group exhibitions at EKA, Vaal and Temnikova & Kasela Galleries.
Okapi Gallery will present Mexico-born artist Niña Yhared’s performance “Via Baltic“. Residing in Vilnius, Lithuania, Yhared focuses her work on the almost 30-year-old civic demonstration, the Baltic Way, where 1 million people formed a 600 km human chain from Estonia to Lithuania, raising questions about nationality, freedom and borders in her performance.
Tallinn Tuesday is the last day of National Romantic exhibition “Tricolor Games” by pop artist Mall Nukke at Haus Gallery. The exhibition shows Estonian flag coloured works from 2014 to 2017, which depict games with tricolour marbles, tangled up fabrics and black latex costumes. The blue of the European Union and the colours of the Euro also bring some variety to the colour gamut.
OGH is a joint project by Greg Ponchak and Paige Früchtnicht, which combines fashion, art, design, curation and architecture. In the context of the exhibition at EKA Gallery, OGH explores the expressions of political action and militarization that are influenced by the Greco-Roman tradition and Neoplatonic Christian Asceticism.
“Euroland” (“Euroopamaa”) is an international group exhibition in the Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, curated by Oleg Frolov, which brings together different generations of artists from Tallinn, Moscow, Berlin and Vienna. Their works have a common interest in exploring the relationships between society and physical space.
The tour ends at Vaal Gallery with the exhibition by Laurentsius (Lauri Sillak) a fetishist aesthete, approaching his subjects with extreme devotion. For this exhibition, Laurentsius has taken on a challenge to paint landscapes, which is demonstrated through his larger-than-life paintings in this forgotten genre.
The projects and exhibitions (except Mall Nukke’s “Tricolor Games”) will remain open throughout the TMW at usual opening hours.
TMW Arts also includes tours to the galleries, artists’ studios and the ARS House.
On Friday, March 31st a special studio tour will present the studios of two contemporary artists: Kristi Kongi and Jaanus Samma. On Saturday, April 1st ARS building’s studios will open their doors to visitors. A building with a history dating back to 1944, offers participants of the studio tour plenty of space to explore. The tour visits the studios of up to four artists – for example, you can check out painter Merike Estna’s latest works in a working studio environment.
For a second year, TMW Arts hosts a joint event by NOAR.eu art environment and Estonian Academy of Arts to introduce the future talents of Estonian art to a wider audience and conduct an online voting campaign to elect the crowd’s favourite. The audience can vote during TMW and a selection of works from the competition will be displayed at Wabadus café.

This year’s edition of TMW from 27th March to 2nd April will present the music festival line-up and two-day industry conference, a series of free City Stage concerts, TMW Arts programme, curated by the Estonian Contemporary Arts Development Centre, Design Market showcasing the most exciting Baltic and Scandinavian brands and designs, TMW Talks series with topics from music to science and societal issues, City Space activities in cooperation with the interior designers of Estonian Academy of Arts and a kids and youth special programme for the first time.
