The art programme of Tallinn Music Week 2020, scheduled to take place on 27 – 30 August, is exceptionally diverse and expansive. In addition to the traditional Thursday gallery tour curated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC), visitors can enjoy light installations and the unique immersive sculpture at the Port Noblessner as well as various exhibitions and Moomin Museum pop-up shop at Fotografiska Tallinn in Telliskivi Creative Center.
The Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is curating a special gallery tour Tallinn Thursday of extended opening hours on Thursday, 27 August. The galleries participating in the programme are Kai Art Center, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, EKA Gallery, the Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Centre, Gallery Positiiv, Okapi Gallery, Haus Gallery and Vaal Gallery. The programme includes exhibitions introducing new works by both Estonian and international artists as well as meetups with the gallerists and artists.
At Kai Art Center new and previously unexhibited works by an acclaimed Estonian artist Kris Lemsalu Malone and Kyp Malone Lemsalu of TV on the Radio fame will be on view together with a large-scale installation that was exhibited earlier in the year at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin. In “Love Song Sing Along (Once Again With Feeling!)” artists take on the roles of archetypal Adam and Eve to tackle the world’s creation myth, giving central roles to characters such as a swan, rabbit, and jaguar. In the artists’ words, “It’s a work that’s taken from the personal in real time then abstracted through myth, some borrowed, some improvised. A cosmogony of our relating to one another.”
During the TMW festival the full exhibition will be available for viewing on 27 and 30 August. Selected works from the exhibition will also be displayed during the TMW concert nights at the Kai Art Center on 28 and 29 August.
The Temnikova & Kasela gallery is presenting a solo exhibition “All Together” of Estonian conceptual painter Kaido Ole. In addition to characters known from his earlier works, Ole inserts himself into the paintings in the roles of an artist, a curator, an installer and a museum director.
The Juhan Kuus Documentary Photo Center in the Telliskivi Creative City is exhibiting a retrospective of Estonian street photography, “Outlook – 40 years of Street Photography in Estonia”. A duo show by Kristel Schwede and Kadri Pettai on the windows of gallery Positiiv looks at the world on the outskirts of the city where every house has as many stories to tell as many dwellers it has had.
Vaal Gallery’s duo exhibition “Shedding Skin” features drawings and an installation by Laura Põld and poetry and short prose by Piret Karro. Haus Gallery presents three exhibitions – Vano Allsalu’s solo show “Of Nature”, Elvi Rangell’s “Life is Good” and Elina Laurinen’s “Colour Appeals”.
The international group exhibition “Grammar of Graphics” at the EKA Gallery in the Estonian Academy of Arts turns its attention to form and their replication through various phrases. Okapi gallery will host a pop-up art sales day with a wide selection of artworks by contemporary photographic and graphic artists available for purchase. On Tallinn Thursday, many of the artists will be present at Okapi, accompanied by a musical performance.
In addition to the Tallinn Thursday gallery tour, several other exhibitions in the festival’s two main locations of Port Noblessner and Telliskivi Creative City will be open.
Marianne Jõgi’s outdoor installation “Interaural Contour I” at the Noblessner Marina promotes both relaxation and learning. The immersive sculpture is accompanied by composer Ülo Krigul’s sound piece “Water Itself”.
From Friday, 28 August, to Sunday, 30 August, light installations by the students of the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) provide an enjoyable and enlightening night-time experience in the area between Krusenstern Square, Kai Art Center, PROTO Invention Factory and the Noblessner Foundry.
The outdoor gallery of the Telliskivi Creative City is featuring the exhibition ““Truth and Justice: Elders” by Estonian avant-garde artist Raul Meel in which the author interprets an Estonian literary classic – A.H. Tammsaare’s “Truth and Justice”.
During 18 – 30 August, for the first time in Estonia, an official Moomin Museum pop-up shop will be open at Fotografiska Tallinn. In collaboration with the Moomin Museum and the Tampere Hall shop, the exclusive products on offer highlight the original works of the Moomins creator Tove Jansson. During TMW, Fotografiska Tallinn is also exhibiting “Exposed”, a collection of famous portraits by Canadian musician Bryan Adams, “Dark Testament” by Lina Iris Viktor, “Gold” by Sebastião Salgado, and “Waterproof Heart” by Ignas Pavliukevičius.
The Tallinn Thursday gallery tour and installations at Port Noblessner are free of charge.
