Over 1300 artists applied to play at the next edition of Tallinn Music Week festival

The 12th edition of the new music and culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), scheduled to take place in the Estonian capital Tallinn from 25th to 28th March 2020, continues to attract musicians from around the world. The artist application round that ran from the end of October until midnight on 1st December resulted in 1323 submissions from 63 countries. The top 3 countries of residence of applicants are Estonia, Russia and for the first time in the festival’s history the UK.

The festival line-up will be announced in February 2020.

TMW 2020 Festival Pass for €40, and Conference + Festival Pass for €150 are on sale at TMW webshop shop.tmw.ee until 13th December. From 14th December the passes will cost €55 and €175, respectively.

The artist application round for the upcoming TMW reflects the growing interest among foreign musicians from all over the world towards the event. Altogether 1323 artists (almost 100 more than last year) from 63 countries applied with an aim to perform at the festival. Topping the list with the highest number of applicants is the host country Estonia (168), followed by its eastern neighbour Russia (162), the UK (130), and Finland (129). Some of the leading music markets like the UK, Germany and Sweden are showing gradual growth in applicant numbers, and the interest rate has also been rising in the further regions and countries, incl. Korea, Hong Kong, Morocco, Senegal, Bermuda, New Zealand, Iran and Mexico.

Festival line-up will be selected from the applicants by a broad-based team of Estonian and international curators. The line-up and programme schedule will be announced in February 2020. The festival will take place from 26th to 28th March 2020 mainly in North Tallinn with central hubs in Telliskivi Creative City and Port Noblessner, among them some of the brand new exciting venues like the photographic art centre Fotografiska Tallinn, Proto Discovery Factory and art centre Kai.

TMW strives to present the most outstanding and adventurous talent from all over the world whilst also reflecting on recent artistic, social and technical developments in music culture. One of the new co-curators joining the TMW ranks to present their variations of musical talent and cultural identities are Finnish Tampere Hall, the largest culture and conference centre in the Nordics that will be celebrating its 30th anniversary next year.

The TMW conference, taking place at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) from 27th to 28th March 2020, addresses topics like “Music 2.0: The future of the music industry” and Sustainable Development Goals, including civic engagement, and human-centred, inclusive and equitable development. The first speakers and panels of the conference will be announced in December 2019.

The festival also pairs its concerts, club nights and conference panels with a daytime programme of free city stage gigs. public talks, art gallery tours, kids’ workshops and urban space explorations spread over North Tallinn and beyond from 25th to 28th March 2020.

Festival Pass grants access to all concerts and club nights of the TMW music festival. Conference + Festival Pass grants access both to the TMW conference and the music festival.
