TMW 2020 Creative Impact Conference reveals the first batch of speakers and core topics Music Industry 2.0 and Culture in the Sustainable Development Goals

The new music and city culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW) has revealed the first speakers and topics for the Creative Impact conference. Taking place at the Estonian Academy of Arts (EKA) from 27th to 28th March 2020, the conference will bring together thinkers and doers from different areas to explore how to build a Music Industry 2.0 and more sustainable future on the foundations of the present.

TMW 2020 is presented by Telia. The music industry panels, workshops and mentoring sessions of the conference are prepared in cooperation with the music industry development centre and export office Music Estonia.

TMW 2020 Creative Impact Conference focuses on the transformative power of culture and creative industries, following the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as outlined by the United Nations General Assembly. Besides discussing the role of culture in public policies and illustrating how creative industries contribute to the realisation of the development targets, the upcoming event will also dive into the more specific needs of the new decade ahead within the statement topic entitled Music Industry 2.0.

Marking the year 2020 as a turning point for the whole industry to set for a healthier, more resilient and prosperous future, the conference dives into the needs of the new decade ahead, exploring, among other topics, the adjustment to the nonreversible era of streaming and a more conscious approach to diversity and sustainability from programming to touring. The conference will also look into the competitive nature of the music business and its mental health issues as well as exploring the importance of individual wellbeing in the context of the global climate crisis.

“Together with the film industry, I think it is fair to say that there is no other creative sector that has gone through such a dramatic transformation due to the digital turn, says Virgo Sillamaa, Director of Music Estonia. “It is time for the visionaries and practitioners of our sector to gather in a discussion on how to continuously upgrade our industry as well as the role we play in society.”

The keynote on the vision for future and the potential of the creative industries as the engine for New Economy will be given by Dr Keith Nurse, the Principal/President of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in St. Lucia. Dr Nurse has worked as a researcher and consultant to governments and organisations in areas of trade policy, intellectual property value capture, industrial policy and innovation governance, creative industries, tourism, migration and diasporas, gender and economic restructuring, and sustainable development. He has also served on the advisory board of the WTO Chairs programme, and the MA in Technology Governance at the University of Tallinn, Estonia.

In preparation for the Music Moves programme by the European Commission, an extensive European Music Export Strategy will be discussed within TMW, setting the agenda and ambition of the European music community in international collaboration. To highlight the progress in the live music sector, Live Music Estonia will host panels and networking programme for regional collaboration.

How to face the challenges, disruptions, and changes that will alter the way we work, collaborate and create in Music Industry 2.0 will be explored further in topics from the night-time economy to the new festival markets, from cultural heritage to the future cities.

The results and data of the two conference days will be summed up in a special presentation of the Music Industry 2.0 agenda by industry experts, data analysts and researchers on Saturday, 28th March.
