The new music and urban culture festival Tallinn Music Week (TMW), taking place for the tent htime on 2-8 April, will once again include a special programme of contemporary arts curated by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC). The gallery evening with extended opening hours called Tallinn Tuesday presents exhibitions from Estonian and international artists, guided tours and musical performances. As part of the TMW Arts, the Estonian art future talents will be introduced and the public can vote their favourite.
TMW Arts kicks off on Tuesday, April 3rd at 5-9 pm with a gallery evening called Tallinn Tuesday that includes a special programme and extended opening hours. The participating galleries are Gallery Positiiv, Okapi Gallery, EKA Gallery, Temnikova & Kasela Gallery, and Vaal Gallery. The programme includes a variety of exhibitions introducing new projects by both Estonian and international artists. There will be guided tours at the galleries throughout the evening; in addition, visitors can meet the gallerists and artists as well as enjoy musical performances.
Andres Teiss’ street photography exhibition ‘Being. Coming. Going’ is on view at Gallery Positiiv on Roo street. The artist, mainly know as a press photographer, describes his relationship with photography: “Pictures from different moments of life have been following me my whole conscious life. Maybe it is my way to cope with the surrounding chaos.” In addition to Teiss’ exhibition, visitors can also see and hear a sound installation by Taavi Tulev at the gallery on Tallinn Tuesday.
The joint exhibition by Anonymus Boh and Taje Tross, presented at the Okapi Gallery in Tallinn Old Town, shows large-scale photographic panoramas from the series ‘Multiverse Realities’. The works address the subcultures and communities that parallel the mainstream of our society, and the aims and behavioural patterns of which create a basis for completely new communities. On Tallinn Tuesday, there will be a performance at the gallery by Risto Puurunen, a member of the Finnish avant-garde pop group Cleaning Women.
The exhibition ‘Sticky Moment’ by Czech artists Anna Slamova and Marek Delong is open to visitors at the EKA Gallery near the Freedom Square. The works of the duo mainly address different emotional expressions and their acceptability in art. On Tallinn Tuesday, the exhibition will be introduced by EKA gallerist Keiu Krikmann.
The international group exhibition ‘Any body suspended in space will remain in space until made aware of its situation’, curated by Margot Samel, is on view at Temnikova & Kasela Gallery. The exhibition explores the language of cartoons in the context of contemporary art trends and trans-media identity policy. In addition to the Estonian stars Kris Lemsalu and Priit Pärn, the participating artists include Ella Kruglyanskaya from Latvia, Rhys Coren from the UK and Jonathan Ehrenberg, Emily Mae Smith and Ken Tisa from the United States. On Tallinn Tuesday, the exhibition will be introduced by Lilian Hiob from Temnikova & Kasela Gallery.
The roundup of Tallinn Tuesday is finalised at 9 pm at Vaal Gallery with a solo exhibition ‘Mercy’ by painter Mauri Gross. The artist describes the exhibition and its title: “The word mercy is so all-embracing that talking about it would take the force from it – the fig leaf falls from the loins and the remaining does not matter. Rather, the focus should be on fine-tuning, to support the inner monologue of the exhibition and to get a visual experience through minimalism and the overly narrative title.” On Tallinn Tuesday, the artist will be present at the gallery and there will be a guided tour of the exhibition.
All these exhibitions will remain open after Tallinn Tuesday and can be visited at the galleries’ regular opening hours during TMW week, from Wednesday, 4 April, to Sunday, 8 April.
An Estonian Art Future Talents competition will take place from 26 March to 6 April, and it invites everyone to get acquainted with young talented artists and choose their favourites on the contemporary art platform www.NOAR.eu.
